Roxbury Russet

Why you should be excited:

Roxbury Russet is an apple from back when russet was viewed as evidence of a rich-flavoured apple.

apple_roxburyrusset.jpgThe story of Roxbury Russet:

Back in the days before atmosphere-controlled apple storage, russets were highly prized for their ability to stay palatable for longer than most other apple varieties.

The most popular of these apples in the U.S. northeast was Roxbury Russet, a fine russet with rich flavour and the ability to remain tasty straight through winter.

While those who don’t know russets might find the scratchy surface and muted colours  of these apples unappealing, those who open their minds and taste buds to the delicious Roxbury Russet will be won over.

Plus, there’s something quietly beautiful about their appearance. We say long live the russets!
