Why you should be excited

Antonovka is a legendary Russian apple variety. Our Antonovka Seedling, which originated in our orchard, is almost identical to its mother.

The story of Antonovka Seedling

Antonovka is a classic Russian apple, revered by Russians everywhere. It’s used for fresh-eating, baking and cider. Plus it’s useful as a winter-hardy rootstock, providing a deep taproot for grafting full-sized apple trees.

We initially planted Antonovka seeds to use as rootstock but then let one grow into this child of Antonovka.

Our seedling benefits from Antonovka’s tendency for its children to grow virtually true from seed. This results in seedlings almost identical to their mother, not an unpredictable hybrid. Unlike virtually every other apple variety, where seedlings are often radically different from the mother.
