Why you should be excited

Sutton Beauty hails from Massachusetts, where it was highly popular around the end of the 19th century.

The story of Sutton Beauty

While it's not exactly a household name pretty much anywhere here in the 21st century, you will still find a few folks in Massachusetts who are actively proud of this once popular apple variety.

Sure, its fame was limited to New England and New York, where it was a particular favourite, but better a regional favourite than no favourite at all.

Sutton Beauty never was a notable cooking apple, however, as its mild flavour just doesn't stand up to the competition for taste bud attention that one gets from most recipes.

But for plain old fresh-eating, well, New Yorkers around 1900 knew what they liked and they definitely liked Sutton Beauty's subacid flavour.
